Notes on Recent Things

Spring is springing here in the UK and I’m grateful for the increase in daylight. It’s been a bit of a strange time but I’ve had some really interesting jobs, met lots of lovely people and feel like I’ve made some really good progress in my personal projects.

As always, most of the work I’ve done can’t be shared yet as the projects haven’t gone live, but Wise Woman’s EP ‘Hold The Wonder’ arrived through my door and it was so exciting to hold it in my hands! I wrote before about working with the brilliant Lydia Bell, Anna Pool and Charlotte Vaughan to create the photographs for the EP artwork, so it was wonderful to see the final result. There’s just something special about printed, physical objects. Visit their website to order a copy of your own and to see them on their tour – they are incredible!

'Hold the Wonder' by Wise Woman. Photograph by Jayne Lloyd. Photograph of a CD and packaging for Hold the Wonder by Wise Woman, photographed on a dark grey fabric background. The EP case is to the left, with text reading 'HOLD THE WONDER, wise woman, LIVE at Blaxhall Village Hall' and a photograph of 3 women sitting on the edge of a stage with a strip of blue background running through the centre and balloons all around them. The CD to the lower right of the image shows a photograph of the faces of the 3 women lying on a blue background in a circular formation, and the EP insert is above that, with a photograph of oen woman sitting sideways on, holding a gold balloon, with a blue background lit with fairy lights and surrounded by balloons behind.

Over the next few weeks I’ll be sharing more of my Home / Work project, photographing the workspaces of people who live and work in the same premises. I’m always looking for more, in all sorts of industries and all sorts of styles so if you’re interested in being included in the project please get in touch.

Outside of work I spent a lovely weekend in York, walked along the Essex coastline, explored Ipswich, hung out in Colchester, photographed the reflection of a partial solar eclipse in a bucket of water and fell in love with a tiny cherry blossom tree I’ve planted outside my window.

In Frinton-on-Sea I bought an Olympus XA 1 from a charity shop as a potential disposable camera alternative to carry around and have fun with. I put a roll of expired Fuji Superia in but didn’t make any changes to compensate for how old it was so most of the frames are underexposed. I was happy with some of them and a benefit of Analogue Wonderland*’s lab system is you can see the scans before you order prints, so you don’t waste money and paper on the worst ones. The XA 1 has a 100 or 400 ASA setting so I’ve used another expired roll of 400 ASA on the 100 ASA setting so we’ll see what results that brings. I’ve also bought some fresh film for the next lot! If you’re in the market for analogue processing or buying film you can use this link to get a free roll of Kentmere 400 35mm film with your order and some loyalty points for me.

Photograph of an Olympus XA 1 camera with an A9M flash, on a dark grey fabric background with 2 prints above and one below. The prints show (clockwise from top left) reflections of water on a ceiling supported by columns and a blue sky with a cloud to the right; a view through a window of part of a house, tops of trees and blue sky with clouds above; part of the facade of Christchurch Mansion in Ipswich, showing a brick building with a clock in the top centre and blue sky and clouds above.

It’s just a brief update today but I’ll be back with more soon, and as always, if you’ve got a project you’d like me to get involved with, a home workspace you’d be happy for me to photograph or film/TV series you think I’d like, please get in touch, it would be lovely to hear from you.
