Beverley Garrod's home workspace. Photographed as part of the Home / Work project by Jayne Lloyd. Photograph of an interior of a converted barn, looking towards a wooden staircase up to a living area in the centre, decorated with pictures on the wall. On the ground floor a large work table covered with fabric and work tools is to the right of the frame, with rolls of fabric, wall-mounted pieces of fabric and machinery behind, with a double door leading to another room in the centre. To the left of the frame is a desk topped with a sewing machine, with decorative hearts and a large glass star suspended above.

HOME / WORK Project: Beverley Garrod

Home / Work is a project documenting people who work from home/live where they work. It’s a project I started in 2016 when I was meeting people running a wide range of fascinating businesses from their homes. I am interested in how people create these workspaces and how the lines between home and work are defined or blurred. If you work from home and are interested in participating in the project please get in touch.

I met Beverley Garrod of House of Garrod through the Chelmsford Breakfast Business Club and was fascinated to hear about the incredible bespoke furnishings and textile pieces she creates in her home studio in rural Essex. A truly unique space, Beverley’s showroom, workspace and family home all coexist in a converted barn where fabrics are skilfully transformed into upholstered sofas, elegant curtains or even complete interior design projects from wall and floor coverings right down to custom embroidery on a cushion.

It was wonderful to visit Beverley’s amazing home studio, see her intricate designs up close and get completely carried away photographing the many fascinating details!

I was interested to know:

When did you start working from home? December 2009

What made you decide to work from home rather than in premises offsite? Childcare

What do you like best about working from home? Flexible working hours.

What aren’t you so keen on/are there any difficulties in working from home? Difficult to relax/always at work.

What is your favourite feature of your workspace? The beams, light and vibe of the space.
