Notes on the week: 22 March 2024

Last weekend I went to London for the afternoon and evening and was really pleased to get to visit my friend Mandy William’s exhibition with Colin Pantall and Dawn Rodgers at Four Corners, Disrupted Landscapes. The work was really powerful and the three very distinct bodies of work really worked well together inn the space.

We walked from Bethnal Green to Islington. I love walks like that through London, where you see streets you haven’t visited before and see how things connect. We were going to see Filter at the o2 Academy, Islington that night so I only had my phone camera on me to collect photographs of the things that caught my eye. (There was also lots of beautiful blossom but it’s probably not a huge shock to you that I’m much more drawn to dead trees and abandoned mattresses.)

The gig was amazing, I sang and danced my heart out.

Photograph of a man singing into a microphone, with green lights shining down above, lighting a cloud of smoke behind him.

From Monday onwards I feel like I wrote a lot of emails. Lots of trying to make arrangements.

Creative Colchester held a new coffee morning social meetup at Patch, which was really nice. I caught up with some people I’ve got to know over the months and met some new people too. The coffee is excellent there too.

On Wednesday the job I had booked was rescheduled and I found myself in London with time to spare, so I looked up what was on and went to visit Nick Waplington’s Living Room at Hamiltons Gallery, and then on to The Photographers’ Gallery. It was great to see the Living Room images at such a large size, to really see the detail in them and I really like the space at Hamiltons. Seeing the images in Mayfair, passing Maseratis and the like, to get there, felt strange.

The Photographers’ Gallery was enjoyable too – I was interested to learn about the work of the photographers nominated for the the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize 2024, the Café Royal Books reading room was great to have a browse through the many, many publications they have produced, and I also really enjoyed Bert Hardy: Photojournalism in War and Peace, which felt timely having done my short course in Photojournalism just recently.

The rescheduled job went well, a nice portrait session that hopefully I can share when the interview it is to accompany goes live.

Today, Friday, I’m attending FORMAT24 portfolio reviews, showing my work to photography professionals. It’s so good to have feedback on work, guidance on changes I can make and it’s giving me lots to think about.
